The Juicing Revolution

juicing revolution

If you aren’t already an active juicer, getting started might seem a little intimidating, but we’re here to tell you that it’s easy, convenient and amazingly healthy too! For those that aren’t vegan or vegetarian, it’s a fantastic way to get more fruit and veg into your system, and for those that are, the multitude of yummy juices you can make is amazing.

Getting Started

First things first, you need a juicer. If you are new to juicing, I recommend a mid-priced juicer. Beware of cheap juicers that break easily, produce low-quality juice and are loud on the ears. While one can spend many thousands of rands on a juicer, do yourself a favour and take a look at the DNA Cold Press Whole Slow Juicer. This juicer is ideal for the beginner, and with a 10-year warranty on the motor, you know it’s an appliance for keeps. The DNA Cold Press Whole Slow Juicer Red is a compact masticating juicer that is a complete departure from the standard masticating method. The Cold Press Technology System method allows the DNA Juicer to extract the maximum amount of nutrients, vitamins, taste and juice from a minimum amount of fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, even soybeans! The DNA cold press juicer features an extra wide feeding chute to fit whole fruits and vegetables and produces pure, clean juice by squeezing produce through a dual-stage juicing process.

Secondly, and especially if not all the fruit and veg you buy is organic, consider the O3 Washer Fruit & Vegetable Washer, it’s a revolutionary new method for cleaning fruits and vegetables. The O3 Washer is one of the most effective ways available to kill bacteria and destroy residual pesticides and fertilizers, reducing the risk of stomach cramps, headaches and long-term ailments from exposure to pesticides and herbicides in fruits and vegetables. The O3 Washer applies a churning current to physically wash the dirt off of the vegetable’s surface while simultaneously employing an electronic ozone generator to ionize the O2 in the air to O3 (ozone), which is then released into the machine through the pump. The powerful oxidation effects of ozone cause pesticide degradation, toxin oxidization, sterilization and disinfection. Ozone degrades to common oxygen and water after approximately 15 minutes leaving no pollutants to harm the environment.

Thirdly, consider a juice saver. The DNA Vacuum Juice Saver allows you to save time by juicing more than your daily requirement and being able to store your juice for up to five times longer. Each Juice Saver stores 750ml of liquid, and it’s perfect for juices, smoothies, soups, yoghurts and any other liquid you can think of. Just pour your liquid into the container, close the lid and pump six times to suck out all the air and create a vacuum tight seal.

Lastly, and as always, we strongly recommend using organic vegetables as much as possible and if not using a juice saver, drinking the juice shortly after you make it. Vegetable juice is highly perishable so it’s best to drink your juice immediately. However, if you’re careful, you can store it for up to 24 hours with only moderate nutritional decline.

Benefits

The increased absorption of nutrients will have two general effects on the body. More nutrients will get into your cells and tissues, and the body will be better able to detoxify. The list of potential benefits to your health is endless and can range from better hair and skin to clearing up long-term illness. Fruit and vegetables can be combined to make super juices whereby one component compliments the other. In this way, juices can be created with the ideal nutrient combinations for treating specific ailments.

By using strong flavours such as orange or lemon to disguise the taste of other ingredients, juicing can be a great way to get kids to eat their greens or any other vegetables that they will not eat in general. Remember, juices with the most potent nutrient content come from fresh fruits and vegetables. Many pre-made juices contain preservatives, sugars and very little if any, of the nutrients that exist in all-natural fruits and vegetables. Ideally, look for fruits and vegetables labelled organic and non-GMO.

Once you get into the habit of juicing, you’ll find that you’ll look forward to your green juice and even miss it if you skip a day.

Happy juicing! 🙂
