Food Additives: The Hidden Dangers

Over the years, food additives have become a significant concern. In total, there are more than 3000 food chemicals added to foods for preservation, colouring, texture, flavour and to improve shelf life. While each one is supposedly legal to use, the question is, are they safe to consume? More often than not, the answer is a resounding NO!

Food Preservatives

Processed foods contain a large number of additives and preservatives, and the build-up over time causes damage to your whole system, causing a general feeling of un-wellness and ill health, which is why it is so important to eat whole foods as much as possible.  When going to the supermarket to do your grocery shopping, get into the habit of reading all the labels carefully before making that purchase. You will be shocked and amazed at what manufacturers add, as many food labels read more like a chemistry experiment than something you’d want to eat.

Many of these chemicals are addictive and cause behavioural issues. People can quickly become addicted to such things as aspartame and are unable to withdraw without suffering severe headaches, diarrhoea, cramping and nausea.  Also, some additives have been linked to skin rashes, asthma attacks, headaches, behaviour problems and even brain tumours.

Food Colourings

Food colourings are synthetic dyes, but some, for example, chlorophyll, beta-carotene, and caramel are naturally formed chemicals. Studies have shown the effects that food colourings have on our children. In a study done by the Food Safety Agency, researchers fed children fruit drinks spiked with a mix of either sunset yellow colouring or sodium benzoate, additives that are commonly found in soft drinks. The findings showed that adverse effects are not just seen in children, with extreme hyperactivity such as ADHD, but can also be seen in the general population experiencing such effects. There is also no doubt that artificial colouring chemicals can cause behavioural problems in children by interfering with their normal nervous system function.

Food Flavourings

The most common food additives are flavourings, such as spices, synthetic flavours and sweeteners such as corn syrup, fructose, dextrose, and sucrose, which are very damaging. Natural flavourings are derived from plant and animals and sources and then usually processed to create an essence. Artificial flavourings only differ in that they are originated from inedible sources.

The best advice is to do your research into the brands that you purchase and avoid food additives and similar chemicals as much as possible.
